ist ein
britischer
Popmusik-Sänger,
der ab Mitte der
1960 Jahre
gemeinsam mit seinem Zwillingsbruder
Paul, ab
1968 als Solointerpret bis Anfang der
1970er-Jahre weltweit Hitparaden-Erfolge
feiern konnte. Sein größter Hit ist das von
Paul Ryan geschriebene „Eloise“.

Kindheit und Jugend
Die eineiigen
Zwillinge waren Kinder der in den
1950er
Jahren recht erfolgreichen Sängerin
Marion Ryan
und ihres ersten Ehemannes
Lloyd Sapherson.
Mit 15 Jahren traten sie selbst ins
Showgeschäft ein; sie übernahmen von da ab
den
Mädchen-
und
Künstlernamen
ihrer Mutter - zunächst als The Ryan
Twins.
Die
musikalischen Anfänge
Die
Ryan-Brüder brachten in den 1960er Jahren
zunächst bei
Decca Records
eine Anzahl Schlager-Singles heraus,
darunter Don't Bring Me Your Heartaches
(1965), Have Pity On The Boy (1966)
und I Love Her (1966), die sich in
der britischen Hitparade platzieren konnten.
Ihr von Top-Designern durchgestyltes
photogenes Aussehen, die eingängigen Songs
und Barrys unverwechselbare Stimme
verschafften ihnen zahlreiche Tourneen,
Auftritte in TV-Shows und eine hohe
Medienpräsenz in den damaligen
Pop-Jugendzeitschriften.
Der
Starrummel und der damit verbundene Stress
brachten Paul jedoch angeblich an den Rand
eines
Nervenzusammenbruchs.
1967 begannen sich die Brüder deshalb auf
neue Wege zu konzentrieren. Sie
unterschrieben Ende 1967 einen
Plattenvertrag beim Label
MGM Records.
Nach Veröffentlichung von zwei gemeinsamen
Singles (Heartbreaker und Pictures
Of Today) verlegte sich Paul auf das
Schreiben und Produzieren der Songs, während
Barry sie als Interpret vortrug.
Die
Solokarriere
Die Single
Eloise war das zweite Solo-Lied, das MGM
Records veröffentlichte und wurde ein
Welthit. In sechs Ländern belegte der
dramatische, reich orchestrierte Song
wochenlang die Nummer 1 der Hitparaden. Im
Heimatland Großbritannien kam Eloise
auf Platz 2. Die Single verkaufte sich
insgesamt über 3 Millionen mal.
Paul schrieb
noch weitere Hits für Barry, z.B. Love Is
Love, The Hunt und Kitsch,
die jedoch nicht an den Welterfolg von
Eloise anknüpfen konnten. Das Lied
Kitsch
beschreibt die Wirkung dieses auch im
Englischen gebräuchlichen Wortes auf Barry
Ryan („...Kitsch is a beautiful word,
it's a beautiful word, it's a beautiful
lullaby...“).
Wie die
Beatles
oder
Mary Hopkin
sang Barry auch Lieder in Deutsch, wie
Zeit macht nur vor dem Teufel halt, das
in der BRD 1972 ein Hit wurde.
Bei
Fotoaufnahmen für die Jugendzeitschrift
Bravo gab
es im Jahr 1969 einen Unfall bei dem Barry
angeblich schwere Verbrennungen erlitt.
Vermutlich war der Vorfall jedoch relativ
harmlos und wurde lediglich zu
Publicity-Zwecken stark dramatisiert.
Nach den großen Erfolgen
[
Nachdem sich
ab 1972 Ryans Platten nicht mehr gut
verkauften und er er geheiratet hatte, zog
er sich ins Privatleben zurück. Gelegentlich
tritt er noch in Oldie-Shows im Fernsehen
auf und präsentiert dort seine größten Hits.
Mit seinem
Hobby, der Fotografie, erarbeitete er sich
ab Mitte der 1980er Jahre einen Ruf als
Fotograf. Seine Fotos hängen u.a. in The
National Portrait
Gallery in
London und
im
Museum of Modern Art
in
New York.
Eloise wurde 1981
von der Band
The Teens
und 1985 von der
Punkband
The Damned
gecovert.
Ein Remix des Originals kam 1990 in
Deutschland noch einmal in die Hitparade.

Barry along with
his brother, Paul, who were both identical twin
sons of Marion Ryan, a fifties pop singer, were
signed by Decca in 1965. With neat long hair and
carefully selected fashionable clothes they were
skillfully marketed by Decca. In 1968, Barry
Ryan went solo and Paul took to songwriting. An
early result of this new partnership was "Eloise",
a stunning single with its melodramatic vocal
style and heavily orchestrated backing. This was
certainly Barry's magnum opus and he soldiered
on for several years after without achieving the
same heights again.

In 1986 the
airwaves were filled with the dramatic sound of
"Eloise" performed by former punk idols
The Damned. The sheer power and scale of
this track written 18 years previously was there
for all to hear. "Eloise" was one of many
classic songs written by Paul Ryan, but it was
his brother Barry who performed on the original
version.
Twins Barry and
Paul were born on 24 October 1948 in Leeds,
England. Their mother was singing star of the
50s Marion Ryan and step-father - show business
impresario Harold Davidson. They grew up using
their real surname Sapherson; by the time of
their fifteenth birthday the twins had entered
show business and taken their mother's name -
Ryan. Under the full glare of media publicity
they released their first single "Don't Bring
Me Your Heartaches" which reached the UK top
twenty. Follow-up singles all fared well and
under the direction of top writer and arranger
Les Reed, they filled a niche left vacant by UK
acts aiming at the US market.
The Ryans were
groomed for stardom. Top designers ensured their
photogenic looks were seen in all the pop papers
but the constant tours and TV appearances were
starting to have an effect on Paul who suffered
a near-nervous breakdown. After a brief lull in
chart action the pair decided to split in 1968.
This took the pressure off Paul who could now
spend more time writing. Barry signed to MGM
Records and the single "Eloise" became
the label's first release. Promoted with one of
the first full videos, this dramatic, powerful
song was an instant smash, selling 3 million
copies and reaching number 1 in six countries.
This unusual
arrangement of one brother writing for another
certainly worked and with further hits "Love
Is Love", "The Hunt" and "Kitsch".
Barry ended the 60s as one of the top pop
performers in Europe, despite never playing a
solo concert outside the UK. Paul was also
having huge success as a writer, having written
"I Will Drink The Wine" for Frank
Sinatra. Sadly, Paul died of cancer in 1992,
aged only 44.
